Chapter 29 - The Vault beneath the Cathedral

The baby inside the portable incubator let out a sudden, piercing cry that bounced off the stained-glass windows of the cathedral. The low-oxygen alarm began to chirp—a shrill, rhythmic warning: *FiO2 critical: 18%*.

"He's running out of air," Claire pleaded, her eyes darting between Antonio’s blade resting against ten-year-old Maya’s neck and Crane’s finger on the detonator. "Crane, look at the monitor! The compressor is failing! If you don't let me vent his chamber, your precious genetic sample will be dead in three minutes!"

Crane glanced down at the incubator, his cold, calculating mind weighing the variables. "Bring the unit to the crypt entrance, Claire. Step over the first tripwire. Antonio, lower the knife two inches. A dead hostage offers no leverage."

Antonio reluctantly eased the blade, his single eye glaring at Sebastian with unbridled hatred. "Hurry up, old man. Marco’s men outside won't stay pinned down forever."

Claire took a deep breath. She looked at Sebastian. In the dim light of the sanctuary lamp, Sebastian gave her the faintest, imperceptible tilt of his chin—a silent signal that had been forged over hours spent watching monitors together in the NICU.

Claire walked slowly toward the stone steps, carrying the heavy incubator. With extreme care, she stepped over the blue tripwire. She stopped five paces from Crane.

"Place it on the communion table," Crane instructed.

Claire set the heavy plastic unit onto the ancient stone table. She popped open the side maintenance hatch, reaching inside as if to adjust the oxygen regulator. But instead of touching the valve, her fingers wrapped around the heavy steel oxygen canister resting in the reserve slot.

"The registry is in the vault below the crypt floor," Crane said, pulling a biometric scanner wand from his pocket. "First, I need your blood sample, Claire. Give me your hand."

"Take it," Claire whispered.

Crane stepped forward, reaching out with the scanner wand.

In that fraction of a second, Claire didn't pull back. With all the strength in her body, she wrenched the heavy steel oxygen tank from its bracket and swung it with ferocious momentum straight into Crane’s temple.

The heavy cylinder struck with a sickening crunch. Crane’s gold spectacles shattered, and he was hurled sideways against the stone pillar, the digital detonator slipping from his fingers and clattering across the marble floor.

"Detonator!" Antonio roared.

Sebastian moved with supernatural speed. He didn't dive for the detonator; he fired three suppressed rounds into Antonio’s right shoulder and hip. Antonio shrieked in pain, his grip on Maya slipping as he collapsed against the crypt wall.

Maya screamed, running toward the nave. "Daddy!"

"Leo, catch your sister!" Sebastian yelled, sprinting forward.

Crane, bleeding heavily from his head, lunged across the floor on his hands and knees, clawing desperately toward the fallen detonator. "If I can't have the trust... no one leaves this sanctuary!"

Claire threw herself over the incubator, shielding the baby with her back as Crane’s bloody fingers brushed the red switch.

A deafening blast echoed through the subterranean chamber—not from the ceiling charges, but from the lower vaults. The floor beneath the altar buckled, the ancient marble cracking like an eggshell. A massive shockwave tore through the crypt, throwing Sebastian against the communion rail.

Dust, pulverized stone, and century-old mortar filled the air in a blinding cloud.

The baby screamed. Maya wailed in terror from the pews where Leo had tackled her to safety.

As the dust slowly cleared, Sebastian pushed a fallen marble column off his legs, coughing violently. He raised his weapon through the haze, searching for his brother and Crane.

Crane lay motionless near the shattered altar, crushed beneath a fallen gargoyle.

Antonio was gone. A trail of dark blood led down into the collapsed chasm beneath the crypt—into the subterranean catacombs where Arthur Miller’s sealed vault stood breached by the explosion.

"Claire!" Sebastian choked out, scrambling over the rubble. "Claire, are you alive?"

Claire pushed herself up from the floor. Her face was smeared with dust and blood, but the incubator beneath her was intact. The baby was crying—a loud, furious, sustained cry that filled the ruined cathedral.

"He's alive," Claire wept, clutching the glass box to her chest. "Sebastian, he's breathing on his own! The shockwave cleared his lungs!"

May you like

Sebastian fell to his knees beside her, gathering her and the incubator into his arms, burying his face in her hair. "It’s over. It’s over, Claire."

"No, Dad..." Leo’s voice came from the edge of the chasm, trembling with sheer disbelief. "It's not over. Look down there."
