Chapter 27 - The Broken Cadence

The rain over the city had turned into a thick, suffocating sleet as Sebastian’s convoy moved toward the historic district. The baby was secured in a military-grade portable incubator powered by the SUV’s secondary battery, with Claire stationed in the rear seat, her hand inside the access portal, constantly monitoring the infant’s skin temperature and breathing rhythm.

Leo sat up front beside Marco, a laptop open on his knees, his bruised fingers flying across the keyboard.

"Crane is using the cathedral’s old pneumatic tunnels," Leo explained, pointing at a three-dimensional blueprint glowing on the screen. "St. Jude’s wasn't just a hospital when it was built in 1912. It was connected to the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulchre by a two-mile underground network of catacombs. That's where Arthur Miller hid the original registry before he disappeared."

"Why the cathedral?" Claire asked, adjusting the baby’s oxygen flow by a fraction of a milliliter. "Why would my father hide medical documents beneath a church?"

"Because Arthur Miller was a man of deep faith," Sebastian said, staring into the dark streets ahead. "And he knew that the Rossi syndicate, for all our sins, held an ancient oath to the founding diocese. No Rossi would ever fire a weapon inside the consecrated crypts beneath the altar. Arthur thought that oath would protect the truth."

"And Antonio broke that oath ten years ago," Claire realized, her stomach turning.

"Antonio doesn't believe in oaths," Sebastian said. "He believes only in leverage and blood. But Crane... Crane is different. Jonathan Crane is an architect of power. If Crane has Maya and Nico down there, he isn't planning to kill them immediately. He needs their biometric signatures to unlock Arthur’s vault."

Claire looked up, stunned. "My father used your children's biometrics?"

"No," Sebastian said quietly, turning around in his seat to meet her eyes. "He used the Rossi genetic marker. The same rare congenital marker that baby in your lap carries. The same marker that you carry, Claire."

Claire froze. Her hand remained poised over the baby’s chest. The SUV seemed to grow impossibly cold. "What did you say?"

"Your father wasn't just a doctor caught in the crossfire, Claire," Sebastian whispered, his voice thick with twenty years of buried grief and guilt. "Arthur Miller adopted you when you were three days old from St. Jude’s nursery. You are not Arthur’s biological daughter."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at her own trembling hands, then down at the fragile infant fighting for breath under the blue light. "Then... who was my mother?"

Before Sebastian could answer, the rear window of the SUV exploded inward in a shower of reinforced safety glass.

A heavy-caliber sniper round tore through the headrest between Sebastian and Marco. The SUV swerved violently across the icy pavement, slamming against the stone wall of the cathedral courtyard.

"Sniper in the bell tower!" Marco shouted, drawing his sidearm as the tires ground to a halt.

Two more high-powered rounds punched through the hood, killing the engine in a plume of white steam. Through the sleet, heavy tactical boots could be heard surrounding the vehicle.

"Claire, get down!" Sebastian roared, unbuckling his seatbelt and throwing his body over the incubator as another round struck the side door.

"They're not aiming for the tires!" Leo yelled, clutching his re-opened wound. "They're trying to box us in! Crane wants the baby alive!"

Sebastian reached into the footwell, hauling out a heavy steel ballistic shield. He slammed open the driver's side door, planting the shield into the slushy ground. "Marco, suppress the bell tower! Leo, stay on the console and override the cathedral’s side gate! Claire—take the baby and follow my footsteps! We have sixty seconds before their strike team breaches this perimeter!"

Claire unhitched the portable incubator from the seat bracket, hoisting the thirty-pound unit against her chest despite the searing pain in her wounded shoulder.

They spilled out into the courtyard under a barrage of gunfire. Sparks ricocheted off Sebastian’s shield with deafening clangs. Sebastian moved like a war machine, returning fire with lethal precision through the shield’s viewport, dropping two approaching mercenaries near the stone gargoyles of the cathedral steps.

Claire ran behind him, her boots slipping on the frozen flagstones, her body wrapped entirely around the glass box.

They reached the heavy, iron-studded oak doors of the cathedral's side entrance. Leo slammed his palm against the electronic keypad, having bypassed the lock from the SUV. The latch clicked open with a heavy metallic thud.

Sebastian shoved Claire and the incubator inside, turning back to haul his wounded son through the threshold just as a sniper bullet pierced Marco’s shoulder. Marco stumbled inward, collapsing onto the marble floor.

Sebastian slammed the massive oak door shut, throwing the six-inch iron deadbolt across the frame.

Outside, the gunfire ceased, replaced by the ominous, synchronized hum of hydraulic breaching saws against the wood.

They were inside the cathedral. The air smelled of cold incense, melted beeswax, and old stone. And from the dark, cavernous depths beneath the main altar, the faint, desperate cry of a little girl echoed through the empty pews.

"Daddy!" Maya’s voice cried out from the darkness. "Daddy, help us!"
