Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Lining

The air in the private NICU consultation room was thick with tension.
Sebastian sat across from Claire at the small wooden conference table. Outside the door, two guards maintained a strict perimeter.
Claire reached into her pocket and placed a small, printed paper on the table—the archived death certificate from fourteen years ago bearing her father’s signature.
"My father delivered your son fourteen years ago, Mr. Moretti," Claire said gently, her voice steady. "I saw the bracelet on your wrist. You’ve been wearing it ever since."
Sebastian stared at the paper. His jaw tightened, a flash of deep, agonizing pain crossing his rugged features.
"They told me my son was born without a heartbeat," Sebastian said, his deep voice thick with emotion. "They showed me a wrapped blanket for thirty seconds before taking him away for incineration under quarantine protocols. But a father knows, Claire. I felt it in my gut every day for fourteen years... my boy didn't die in this hospital."
Claire leaned forward. "My father was the doctor who signed this. Before he died five years ago, he kept telling me that he made a deal with darkness to save our family from financial ruin. I never understood what he meant... until today."
Sebastian looked up, his intense dark eyes meeting hers. "Your father was forced to forge the death certificate, Claire. The Valenti family paid him off or threatened his life to steal my newborn heir and hide him away as leverage."
"And Baby Miller?" Claire asked, her mind piecing together the terrifying puzzle. "How does a newborn in 2026 connect to a baby lost in 2012?"
Sebastian reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, yellowed piece of paper that had been tucked inside Baby Miller’s cream hospital blanket when he arrived.
"This note was written in your father’s handwriting," Sebastian revealed, handing the paper to Claire. "He wrote it before he died, giving it to a trusted nurse with instructions to deliver it only when a surrogate carrying the Moretti bloodline gave birth."
