Chapter 16 - Fractured Trust

The twin-engine helicopter sliced through the torrential rain, cutting through the dense fog that cloaked the Catskill Mountains. Inside the cabin, Claire sat wrapped in a heavy tactical jacket Sebastian had draped over her shoulders. The warmth of the coat smelled faintly of cedar, expensive tobacco, and Sebastian’s distinctive scent.

Sebastian sat opposite her, cleaning a matte-black firearm with mechanical precision. Despite the violence that surrounded him, there was a steadying, calm presence about the man that Claire found impossibly reassuring.

"Are you afraid of me, Claire?" Sebastian asked without looking up from his weapon.

Claire looked at his scarred hands, hands that had commanded armies in the concrete canyons of the city, yet had cradled Baby Miller with such breathtaking gentleness.

"I was," she admitted truthfully. "When you first walked into the NICU, with blood on your cuffs and coldness in your eyes... I thought you were a monster."

Sebastian paused, sliding the magazine into the grip with a sharp *clack*. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "And now?"

"Now I know that monsters don't hold dying premature babies against their bare chests for six hours straight just to keep them warm," Claire said softly, reaching out across the narrow cabin to place her small hand over his knuckles. "You're a man who has lost everything and fought through hell to get it back."

Sebastian looked down at her hand covering his. Slowly, he turned his palm over, intertwining his long fingers with hers. The intensity in his gaze made Claire’s breath catch in her throat.

"When this is over, Claire," Sebastian said, his voice husky and low, "the pediatric wing at St. Jude’s will be yours. But you won't have to carry the weight of this world alone anymore. Neither will my boys. I will protect you with every breath left in my body."

"Sebastian..." she whispered, her heart fluttering.

Before she could speak another word, the pilot’s voice crackled through their headsets: "Don Moretti, three minutes to touchdown at Genesis Pavilion. Sir... something’s wrong. The facility perimeter lights are out. There’s smoke rising from the rear courtyard."
