Chapter 3 - The Ghost under the Watch

Hours drifted by as night settled over the city.
The bright overhead fluorescent lights of the NICU were dimmed to create a soothing environment for the sleeping infants. Most of the staff had rotated shifts, leaving Claire on late-night monitoring duty.
Sebastian had not moved from the rocking chair.
He sat in the exact same spot, holding Baby Miller snugly against his chest. The baby was fast asleep, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect sync with the steady heartbeat beneath him.
On the small bedside table beside the rocker, Sebastian’s luxury smartphone vibrated repeatedly, the screen glowing in the dark with urgent, unread messages from his lieutenants. Sebastian didn't even look at it. His focus was entirely anchored to the tiny life resting on his chest.
Claire walked quietly across the soft rubber flooring, holding a steaming paper cup of black coffee.
"Thought you might need this, Mr. Moretti," she whispered, stepping into his personal space with a quiet offer of comfort.
Sebastian looked up, his dark eyes tired but alert. "Thank you, Nurse Bennett."
He reached out his right arm to accept the cup from her hand.
As his arm extended, his dress shirt cuff slid back three inches beneath the heavy band of his luxury gold wristwatch.
Claire’s eyes happened to glance down at his wrist—and froze.
Resting directly beneath the million-dollar watch was a worn, faded, yellowed plastic newborn hospital bracelet. It was brittle with age, the printed black barcode faded by years of friction against skin.
Claire’s breath hitched. As a thirteen-year veteran of St. Jude’s, she recognized the exact identification format stamped on that band. It was the legacy serial prefix used by St. Jude's infant delivery wing fourteen years ago—a band given only to mothers and fathers on the day a child was born.
Sebastian instantly caught where her gaze had landed.
With a swift, controlled motion, he pulled his wrist back and adjusted his shirt cuff, completely concealing the faded plastic bracelet beneath the dark fabric.

He looked up at Claire, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine.
Neither of them spoke a word, but the silence between them hummed with a massive, buried secret.
