Chapter 28 - The Architect’s Seal

The vast expanse of the cathedral’s nave was swallowed in shadow, illuminated only by the faint red glow of the sanctuary lamp hanging high above the marble altar. Sebastian moved down the central aisle, his boots silent against the stone, his suppressed pistol raised. Claire followed directly behind, carrying the incubator, while Leo stayed at the threshold, tending to Marco’s gunshot wound with a tourniquet.

"Maya!" Sebastian called out, his voice sharp, echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

"Daddy, don't come down!" Nico’s young, panicked voice cracked from the crypt stairs beneath the pulpit. "There are wires on the floor!"

Sebastian stopped instantly. He motioned for Claire to halt near the third row of pews. He crept toward the entrance of the crypt, lowering himself to examine the stone threshold.

Strung across the top of the dark stone steps were three ultra-fine tripwires connected to military-grade C4 blocks wedged into the historic arches. One wrong footstep would bring the entire cathedral down upon their heads.

"Jonathan Crane," Sebastian spoke into the echoing gloom, his tone chillingly level. "You always were a coward who hid behind calculations."

Footsteps clicked on the stone stairs below. A man emerged from the shadows, stepping carefully over the tripwires. He was in his late fifties, wearing an elegant camel-hair coat over a pristine hospital suit, gold wire-rimmed spectacles perched on his nose, holding a digital detonator casually in his left hand.

Doctor Jonathan Crane looked more like a university dean than a syndicate executioner, but his eyes were cold, devoid of human warmth.

"Sebastian," Crane said politely, adjusting his glasses. "I must commend you. To survive Antonio’s ambush at the docks, dive into freezing harbor waters, and still make it here in time for the final audit... you truly are your father's son."

"Where are my children, Crane?"

"Maya and Nico are perfectly comfortable in the lower ossuary," Crane replied calmly. "Sitting on pressure plates, of course. If they stand up, the crypt collapses. If you shoot me, the dead-man switch in my hand releases, and the crypt collapses. It’s an elegant equation, Sebastian. Zero room for error."

Claire stepped forward from the shadow of the pews, the portable incubator glowing faintly in her arms. "Doctor Crane... why? You were my father’s mentor. You spoke at his memorial service! You told me he was a hero who dedicated his life to healing children!"

Crane turned his gaze toward Claire, his expression softening into something deeply patronizing. "Arthur was a sentimental fool, Claire. He believed that medicine was an act of charity. He failed to see that genetics is the only true currency of the twenty-first century. The Rossi family had amassed five hundred million dollars in untraceable European trusts. Trusts that could only be claimed by an heir with the certified Rossi genetic sequence."

"And Antonio didn't have it," Claire breathed, the pieces finally locking together.

"Antonio was adopted into the family as a boy," Crane revealed, a thin smile touching his lips. "An open secret that only your father and the senior Rossi knew. When Sebastian took the throne, Antonio grew desperate. He offered me fifty percent of the trust if I could falsify a child’s birth certificate using Antonio's DNA. But Arthur Miller stole the registry and destroyed the digital servers."

"And that's why Arthur had to die," Sebastian growled, his knuckles whitening around his weapon.

"Arthur died because he hid the real heiress," Crane said, pointing his gloved finger straight at Claire.

Claire felt the world stop spinning. Her ears began to ring. "What?"

"You aren't Arthur’s daughter, Claire," Crane said softly. "You are Sebastian's older sister. Born to his father’s second wife, hidden away by Arthur Miller the night the old don was murdered in Sicily. You are the sole legal inheritor of the European trusts. Sebastian was only the regent. And that baby in your arms... that child is Sebastian's only direct male descendant."

Claire stared at Sebastian. Sebastian kept his gun trained on Crane, but the sorrow in his eyes confirmed every terrifying word.

"I didn't know until three weeks ago, Claire," Sebastian whispered, his voice trembling for the first time. "When your father’s safety deposit key arrived at my estate with his final letter. He told me to protect you. He told me to keep you away from the syndicate at all costs."

"How touching," Crane interrupted, his thumb caressing the detonator’s switch. "A family reunion in the house of God. But there is a small problem with Arthur's puzzle. The vault beneath this church requires two genetic samples to open the biometric lock: the original heiress... and the newest descendant."

From behind the crypt archway, a shadow stepped out.

Antonio Rossi, soaked, bleeding from his side, his scarred face twisted in venomous triumph, held Maya by the shoulder with one hand and a combat knife in the other.

"Give Crane the baby, sister," Antonio snarled. "Or little Maya’s throat opens right here on the altar."
