Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Sanctuary

The revelation hung in the air of the high-tech medical suite like an electric charge. Claire felt the ground beneath her shift. Her father, Dr. Arthur Miller, had been the Chief of Pediatric Medicine at St. Jude’s until his untimely death in a car crash seven years ago. He was a saint in her eyes—a selfless physician who had taught her everything about medicine and morality.

"Are you certain?" Sebastian asked, his voice low, measured, devoid of accusation but intensely focused.

"I dusted that brass ship every week when I was a teenager," Claire said, her voice shaking as she gripped the edges of the metal cart. "When my father died, his estate was in shambles. There were debts I couldn't explain, accounts wiped clean. But he never spoke about surrogacy clinics. He was a pediatric cardiologist!"

Sebastian looked from Claire down to the file, then to the baby resting under the warm glow of the phototherapy lamp. "Baby Miller didn't have a real name registered at the hospital. The intake staff simply nicknamed him 'Miller' after the ward."

"The Miller Ward," Claire gasped, her eyes widening. "My father funded that wing fifteen years ago through an anonymous donor foundation. We always called it the Miller Ward after his passing."

"Which means whoever brought this child to St. Jude’s didn't choose that hospital by coincidence," Sebastian deduced, his mind connecting the lethal patterns of the underworld. "They left my infant son in the care of Arthur Miller’s daughter."

Before Claire could fully process the weight of that realization, a knock sounded at the door. Dante stepped inside, his expression grim.

"Boss. We ran the full genetic panel on Baby Miller from the blood drawn at St. Jude’s this afternoon," Dante said, handing Sebastian a tablet. "The lab rushed the sequencing."

Sebastian took the tablet. Claire stood beside him, reading over his shoulder. The screen displayed the primary parental match: Sebastian Moretti, 99.98% paternal certainty.

But below that was the maternal lineage marker.

Claire gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

"That's impossible," Claire whispered.

Sebastian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. The maternal markers didn't belong to some unknown donor. The genetic sequence shared a direct, unambiguous fifty-percent chromosomal match with Claire’s own family haplogroup.

Baby Miller was not just Sebastian Moretti’s child.

He was biologically connected to Claire.
