Chapter 11 - Chloe saw too much
Chloe did not understand guarantees.
She understood Grandma hurt Mommy.
Afterward, Evelyn tried to make everything appear normal before guests arrived.
She told Maya:
“Wash your face. Cover your arms. Serve dinner.”
Maya wrapped her wrists herself.
Then Chloe would not leave her.
So Evelyn put Chloe beside the sink.
“Help your mother.”
Maya repeatedly tried to keep Chloe away from hot water.
The camera showed that too.
Every time Maya moved Chloe toward the living room, Evelyn sent her back.
Why?
Control.
My mother wanted Maya occupied.
Silent.
Visible enough that guests would assume:
May you like
Everything is fine.
That image would matter later.
