Chapter 23 - Our marriage

Maya and I nearly separated.
Not because of my mother alone.
Because Maya said:
“You built a life where everyone is afraid to tell Alex Vance bad news.”
That sentence destroyed me more effectively than any lawsuit.
I said:
“I never asked for that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
She was right.
At work, I rewarded decisiveness.
At home, I expected people to know I was different.
But power follows you through the front door even when you take off the suit.
We entered counseling.
I changed household reporting.
Changed company reporting too.
Anonymous complaint channels.
Independent compliance escalation.
No family members bypassing controls.
Maya called it:
May you like
“Using trauma to become annoyingly responsible.”
I accepted the insult.
