Chapter 3 - The camera

I installed cameras after a break-in attempt two years earlier.
Exterior.
Entry hall.
Kitchen.
Garage.
The kitchen camera was visible.
Everyone knew it existed.
My mother apparently believed it only recorded when the alarm system was armed.
She was wrong.
Motion events were stored remotely.
I opened the app.
Maya whispered:
“Start around four fifteen.”
I did.
At 4:17 p.m., my mother entered the kitchen.
Maya was beside the counter.
Chloe sat coloring.
They were arguing.
Audio was clear.
Maya:
“You cannot tell those people Alex guaranteed anything.”
Evelyn:
“You don’t understand how this family works.”
Maya:
“I understand his signature isn’t on that document.”
Then my mother walked toward the stove.

She lifted a kettle.
My stomach dropped.
