Chapter 4 - It wasn’t dishwater

I will not describe every second.
I do not need to.
The recording showed enough.
Evelyn demanded Maya hand over her phone.
Maya refused.
My mother grabbed her wrist.
During the struggle, she deliberately pressed Maya’s wrists against dangerously hot cookware long enough to cause superficial-to-partial thickness burns.
Maya pulled away.
Chloe screamed.
Then Chloe tried to reach her mother.
Evelyn snapped:
“Stay there.”
Later, she forced Maya to continue kitchen work.
Chloe tried to help.
Her hands became reddened handling water and dishes that were too hot for a child.
No severe permanent injury.
Still abuse.
Still horrifying.
I watched forty seconds.
Then stopped.
My hands were shaking.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What did you do?”
She answered:
May you like
“She’s exaggerating.”
The camera was still in my hand.
