Chapter 2 - The pot

There was a large soup pot beside the sink.
Steam rising.
I walked toward it.
Maya said:
“Alex.”
I should have listened to her tone.
Instead, I picked up the pot.
Carried it into the dining room.
The guests stared.
My mother said:
“What are you doing?”
I tipped it across the center of the table.
People jumped backward.
Soup flooded over linen, plates, flowers.
A few drops splashed clothing.
Nobody suffered serious burns, thankfully.
But it was reckless.
Angry.
Unnecessary.
“Everyone out. You have five minutes.”
Several guests fled immediately.
Others froze.
Evelyn looked at me as though I had embarrassed her.
That almost made me laugh.
Then Maya grabbed my sleeve.
“Alex… the burns weren’t from dishwater.”
I turned.
“Then what?”
She pointed toward the kitchen camera.
May you like
“Check it.”
My mother’s expression changed.
