Chapter 12 - THE FOUNDATION AUDIT

The Corsini Heritage Foundation audit lasted seven months.

No collapse.

No FBI raid at dawn.

No reporters uncovering a secret criminal empire beneath historic masonry.

Documents.

Interviews.

Invoices.

Beneficial-ownership records.

Bank statements.

Pricing analysis.

The final findings were ugly enough without invention.

Marcus had knowingly submitted or allowed submission of conflict disclosures that failed to reveal his indirect ownership in North Quay.

North Quay’s pricing exceeded benchmark ranges on several categories.

Approximately $920,000 in excessive or unsupported charges remained after all documentation was considered.

Some of the original $410,000 unsupported amount was substantiated later; other pricing concerns remained.

Celeste had received undisclosed consulting income tied to Marcus’s holding structure while participating in foundation operations.

She later made a materially misleading statement that Elena had cleared the ownership issue.

Then after Elena’s death, no one reopened the file.

Weak controls.

Overreliance on trust.

Family names functioning as references.

The board took responsibility too.

Not only Marcus.

Not only Celeste.

The foundation negotiated restitution and civil recovery from Marcus-controlled entities.

Insurance covered a portion of professional losses.

North Quay repaid agreed amounts over time rather than collapsing.

Employees who had done legitimate work were not treated as conspirators.

The Corsini family did not seize businesses in revenge.

Then criminal review.

Specific false invoices and ownership certifications supported fraud-related charges against Marcus.

The exact counts came from prosecutors, not me.

Celeste faced separate exposure for evidence concealment and the attempted removal of Lucy.

More serious to me.

Different legally.

Then San Aurelio remained open.

People bought bread at the market.

Children went on school tours.

The building did not become cursed because some adults lied about vendor ownership.

I liked that.

Institutions should survive the people who misuse them.
