Chapter 19 - LUCY ASKS ABOUT HER MOTHER

Lucy was nine when she asked:

“Did Celeste make Mommy sick?”

No.

The question came during breakfast.

No warning.

I put down my coffee.

“No.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

“What killed her?”

“Cancer.”

“Could doctors fix?”

“They tried.”

“Did Marcus make cancer?”

“No.”

Then:

“Why did Celeste say she didn’t kill her in the letter?”

Because adults underestimate how long a child keeps one sentence.

I told Lucy the basic truth.

When she was three, Celeste frightened her using words about seeing Mommy.

Lucy thought Celeste had caused Mommy’s death and might cause hers.

Later, adults discovered Celeste and Marcus had hidden a money-and-business problem Elena found before she died.

Separate.

Lucy frowned.

“So Mommy found bad money?”

“Something like that.”

“Was Mommy police?”

“No.”

“Cooler?”

“Much.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Did Mommy leave photo because she knew?”

“Yes.”

I did not show her the whole file.

Not yet.

Truth has age limits when details belong to adult burdens.
