Chapter 20 - ELENA’S PARENTS

Elena’s parents had never trusted Celeste.

I thought that was grief jealousy.

Another mistake.

After I announced our engagement, Elena’s mother, Patricia, asked:

“Did Elena ever say anything about Celeste and Marcus?”

I said:

“Business tension.”

She looked at me.

Then let it go.

Why?

Because she did not know enough.

After the audit, I apologized.

Not for remarrying.

For dismissing the question.

Patricia said:

“I wanted to hate her because she was sleeping in my daughter’s house.”

Harsh.

Then:

“That didn’t mean I knew she had done anything.”

Good.

No retroactive prophecy.

Elena’s father remained part of Lucy’s life.

Christmas.

Birthdays.

School plays.

No Corsini family absorbing the maternal grandparents.

Lucy belonged to multiple histories.

The photograph no longer carried all of Elena alone.
