Chapter 7 - THE PHOTO FRAME

The frame itself was cheap.

That surprised everyone.

No secret-compartment heirloom.

No carved Corsini crest.

Elena bought it at a pharmacy because Lucy had knocked the original silver frame from the dresser and shattered the glass.

That made the hiding place better.

Nobody values ordinary things enough to search them.

The forensic lab finally accessed part of the card.

Not everything.

A folder structure appeared.

SAN_AURELIO.

NORTH_QUAY.

MARCUS.

C_HALE.

Then:

RAFFAELE.

Password layer still blocked the files.

But metadata showed Elena created most of them during the final five months of her life.

Then one unencrypted text note.

R,

This is not about my illness. Please do not let anyone turn my death into a story it is not.

I stopped.

Elena had known me too well.

Then:

I am sick. I am going to die because I am sick.

There.

Direct.

No murder mystery.

No poisoning.

No sabotage.

Cancer.

Then:

What Marcus did is separate. What Celeste chose to protect is separate. Keep them separate.

I read it three times.

Dominic waited.

Then:

“If Lucy ever hears about this, she gets the truth in pieces she can carry. Not your anger.”

My dead wife was still giving me orders.

Annoying woman.

Then the final visible sentence:

If you cannot open the rest, San Aurelio opening day. The blue dress.

Password clue.

Elena wore a blue dress at San Aurelio’s public reopening.

Date:

April 12.

M-17.

Maybe room? Photographer?

Dominic guessed:

04-12 and M-17 from earlier note.

Password reconstruction took hours.

Then the card opened.

Not yet to us.

Forensic team needed to make a verified working copy and preserve chain of custody.

Fine.

Procedure.

Meanwhile, Lucy refused to sleep near any suitcase.

We removed none from the house.

Her therapist advised against making luggage disappear permanently.

Instead:

Keep them closed.

Visible.

Explain purpose.

Clothes go inside.

People do not.

The first night she saw one in the guest hall, she screamed.

I nearly ordered every suitcase burned.

Then remembered:

Protection can become another kind of fear if the whole house starts behaving as though objects are dangerous.

So we moved slowly.

Lucy slept in my room.

Her mother’s photograph beside her.

A duplicate print, because the original frame remained evidence.

She touched Elena’s face before sleeping.

Then asked:

“Celeste dead?”

“No.”

“Gone?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

“I don’t know.”

May you like

She hated that.

So did I.
