Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXTERNAL AUDIT

The timing came from me.
Without knowing.
Two months before the suitcase, I ordered a full review of Corsini Heritage Foundation procurement.
Not because I suspected Marcus.
Because a new institutional donor required stronger related-party controls before committing twenty million dollars over five years.
Normal modernization.
Outside auditors requested beneficial-ownership records for all major vendors used during the prior seven years.
North Quay appeared automatically.
Marcus learned.
He asked Dominic whether archived disclosures would be reopened.
Dominic answered:
“Yes.”
Marcus then called Celeste.
We had the phone records.
Not content initially.
Then texts.
MARCUS:
They’re pulling San Aurelio.
CELESTE:
So?
MARCUS:
The old disclosure is still in file.
CELESTE:
We fixed that.
MARCUS:
No. We talked about fixing it.
There.
The difference.
Then:
CELESTE:
Elena had the ownership docs.
MARCUS:
Elena is dead.
CELESTE:
She kept copies of everything.
Three days later, Celeste searched the family archive database for:
ELENA SAN AURELIO.
No results.
Then:
PHOTO INVENTORY ELENA.
Why photos?
She remembered something.
Perhaps Elena once mentioned keeping sensitive notes at home.
Then four days before the suitcase, Lucy dropped the framed photograph while playing.
The back loosened.
Her nanny taped one corner temporarily.
Celeste saw the black tape underneath.
That was the moment.
Household camera showed her picking up the frame.
Turning it.
Then putting it back when Lucy entered.
She knew.
Then Marcus came to Villa Corsini twice.
No unusual reason given.
Once for dinner.
Once “to see Celeste.”
He entered Lucy’s room during the second visit while she was downstairs.
A hallway camera showed him inside for forty-three seconds.
He later admitted he searched for the frame.
It was with Lucy.
Then the audit schedule.
External auditors were arriving at 9:00 A.M. the morning after the suitcase.
The North Quay vendor file was one of the first ten samples.
Marcus knew.
Celeste knew.
They had one night.
Then the plan formed.
Marcus wanted the microSD destroyed before auditors or I knew it existed.
Celeste wanted more.
She wanted to leave.
Why?
Because she understood her own exposure.
Not only old conflict disclosures.
After Elena died, Celeste had personally told the foundation controller:
Elena cleared North Quay.
That statement had kept the file closed.
Then, after marrying me, she had access to my household and knew the audit was coming.
Silence had turned into active concealment.
Then Lucy.
Celeste could not remove the photograph without Lucy screaming.
So she decided to remove both.
The suitcase was supposed to get them past staff.
Then Celeste would call me from outside the estate.
What would she demand?
Investigators recovered a draft message in her phone.
Raffaele, Lucy is safe. Do not give the San Aurelio files to anyone until I explain. Give me until tomorrow night. I swear I will bring her back.
I stared at it until the words blurred.
One day.
She planned to use my daughter to buy her brother one day.
One day to do what?
Marcus had a draft dissolution document for Hale Meridian Holdings.
Another for transferring his North Quay interest to the outside partner.
Could he erase old ownership by transferring now?
No.
Records persist.
But perhaps he believed changing present ownership would make tomorrow’s review less explosive.
Then a scheduled call with North Quay’s accountant.
Then a draft settlement offer to repay:
$1.2 million.
Without admitting wrongdoing.
He was preparing to negotiate before disclosure.
Again.
Create the result first.
Explain later.
Then the final decrypted folder finished processing.
File name:
CELESTE_KNEW_BEFORE_ELENA_DIED.
Dominic looked at me.
The auditors had preserved it.
Police had their copy.
No one could make it disappear now.
May you like
I opened the folder.
And for the first time I learned exactly what my dead wife had left behind, what Celeste had hidden, and why Marcus was willing to destroy a family to keep one old project from being examined in daylight.
