Chapter 16 - MARCUS AFTER PRISON

Marcus lost most Corsini work.

Naturally.

Not because I issued a family curse.

Because foundation procurement rules prohibited vendors controlled by people convicted of fraud-related offenses from bidding during a defined period.

His company survived smaller.

He sold his interest in North Quay as part of restitution and restructuring.

Outside clients remained.

Some left.

Some stayed.

After prison, he worked for a regional construction firm in a nonfinancial operations role.

People hated that.

“He gets a job?”

Yes.

A criminal sentence is not a requirement to remain unemployed forever.

He was still good at construction.

He had been bad at conflicts, disclosure, and truth when money and family mixed.

Then he wrote me one letter.

I did not answer for years.

It said:

I told Celeste not to take Lucy. That has become the sentence I use to make myself feel cleaner than I was.

Good start.

Then:

I still went to the house. I still searched her room. I still reached for Elena’s photograph while Lucy was holding it.

Then:

I cared more about what was behind the picture than what the child holding it was seeing.

There.

He understood.

No forgiveness requested.

Better.
