Chapter 22 - THE PHOTO WITHOUT THE CARD

The original photograph came back after evidence retention ended.
The frame did not.
It had been handled, taped, catalogued, marked.
Lucy chose a new one.
Simple wood.
No hiding space used.
The microSD stayed in legal archive storage.
The photograph returned to her room.
Then, at sixteen, Lucy removed it herself.
I saw an empty spot on the dresser.
My chest tightened.
“Where’s Mom?”
“In my drawer.”
“Why?”
“I’m changing the room.”
Of course.
She was sixteen.
Posters.
Books.
Clothes.
A dead mother’s photograph did not need permanent central placement to prove love.

The same applied to decorating.
I said:
“Okay.”

Then left.
