Chapter 25 - LUCY’S LIFE

Lucy became an emergency-room physician.
That surprised me.
I had expected architecture.
Law.
Maybe forensic accounting out of genetic spite.
Instead she liked medicine because:
“People come in scared and somebody has to know what matters first.”
That sentence sounded familiar.
She married a teacher named Daniel Morris.
No old family.
No gate.
No signet ring.
I behaved.
Mostly.
They had a daughter.
Elena.
Of course.
Then, when little Elena was two, Lucy traveled for a medical conference.
I saw the suitcase open on her bedroom floor.
My body remembered before my mind.
Lucy noticed.
“Dad.”
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re doing the face.”
“What face?”
“The suitcase face.”
Apparently I had one.
She zipped it.
Then opened it again.
“See? Clothes.”
I laughed.

She had become cruel in adulthood.
Healthy.
