Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING

The first recovered file was audio.

Elena.

Marcus.

Celeste.

Conference room at San Aurelio.

Elena had recorded with consent? Important. The file began with Elena saying:

“I’m recording because I’m tired and I don’t want to rely on notes. Is everyone okay with that?”

Marcus:

“Yes.”

Celeste:

“Fine.”

Good.

Legal enough in many contexts anyway, but consent removed the question.

Elena sounded weak.

Cancer had already changed her voice.

She asked Marcus:

“Do you own Hale Meridian Holdings?”

“Yes.”

“Does Hale Meridian own forty-nine percent of Meridian Restoration?”

“Yes.”

“Does Meridian Restoration own North Quay?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Elena:

“Why does your vendor disclosure say no beneficial interest?”

Marcus answered:

“Because I’m not involved in North Quay operations.”

Elena:

“That wasn’t the question.”

My wife.

Always.

Then Celeste intervened.

“The structure predates San Aurelio.”

Elena:

“That also wasn’t the question.”

Then Marcus:

“I didn’t think indirect passive ownership counted.”

Elena:

“Our form specifically says direct or indirect.”

Silence.

Then:

“Have you received distributions?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Marcus did not know exactly.

Then Elena:

“Celeste, did you know?”

Long pause.

“Yes.”

There.

Then:

“Before you approved the invoices?”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

Then Elena said:

“Okay. We stop here. No accusation. No theatrics. I want full ownership disclosure and independent pricing review.”

Reasonable.

Marcus became defensive.

“Are you implying fraud?”

“No. I’m saying conflict.”

Then:

“If pricing is fair, we document it. If not, we fix it.”

Elena was giving them an exit.

An honest one.

Then Celeste said:

“Please don’t take this to Raffaele yet.”

Silence.

Elena:

“Why?”

“He’ll take Marcus off every family project before review is complete.”

Maybe.

Then:

“He won’t separate conflict from betrayal.”

That hurt because she knew me.

Elena answered:

“Then maybe he needs to learn.”

My dead wife again.

Then the recording ended.

No threat.

No crime confession.

No murder.

A governance problem that could have been fixed.

Then another audio file dated three weeks later.

Only Elena.

A memo to herself.

“Celeste says Marcus corrected disclosure. I have not received revised form.”

Then:

“C. has copies of the underlying ownership documents. If I’m hospitalized again, ask her.”

Celeste has copies.

That explained the note.

Elena initially trusted her.

Then later documents showed that trust changed.

One draft email:

Celeste, I asked twice for the revised disclosure. If Marcus will not provide it, I will send the matter to outside counsel Friday.

Was it sent?

No evidence.

Elena was admitted to hospital Thursday night.

Treatment complication.

She never returned to the committee.

Then the external counsel file contained no referral.

The issue died with her workload.

Not her body.

That distinction mattered.

Then the next recovered folder was labeled:

AFTER_I_AM_GONE.

Inside were seven files.

One:

For Raffaele.

Another:

For the Foundation Trustee.

Another:

North Quay Summary.

Another:

Celeste communications.

Another:

Do not let Marcus call this a misunderstanding.

Then one file remained corrupted.

Forensic team worked.

Chapter 9 would reveal why Celeste panicked now.

May you like

Because Elena’s evidence had not simply survived.

It was about to collide with an audit already underway.
