Chapter 23 - THE FULL FILE

Lucy read Elena’s audit file at eighteen.

Not because law required it.

Because she asked.

We prepared copies that excluded unrelated private information.

She listened to the recording with Marcus and Celeste.

Heard her mother’s voice.

That was harder than the numbers.

Elena sounded alive.

Impatient.

Funny.

Professional.

Lucy cried.

Then asked:

“Did Mom know Celeste would marry you?”

“No.”

“Would she have hated that?”

I smiled sadly.

“Elena was capable of being very annoyed.”

“Dad.”

“I don’t know.”

Honest.

Then Lucy read the personal letter.

The line:

Do not let adult guilt rewrite what happened to my body.

She looked at me.

“So she knew you’d go crazy.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“Moderately.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Was Celeste evil?”

“No.”

“Marcus?”

“No.”

“They put me in a suitcase.”

“Celeste did.”

“She lied.”

“Yes.”

“They stole money.”

“Not exactly. They concealed conflicts and some money was improperly charged.”

Lucy rolled her eyes.

“You sound like a lawyer.”

“Dominic damaged me.”

Then she said:

“I think evil would be easier.”

“Yes.”

That was the lesson.

People can love.

Help.

Lie.

Protect the wrong person.

Become frightened.

Commit serious harm.

None of that requires them to transform into mythical monsters.

It requires consequences.
