Chapter 18 - The house becomes evidence

For months, investigators photographed:
Cabinets.
Painting mounts.
Storage locations.
Alarm zones.
Not because the house was a crime scene forever.
Because the planned removals were tied to specific objects.
Sophie hated strangers measuring the study.
“Are they taking Daddy’s things?”
“No.”
“Then why pictures?”
“To show what was supposed to happen.”
She frowned.
Then:
“Can they take my things?”
“No.”
Amanda had never listed Sophie’s belongings.
No reason to scare her.
Then the flower basket.
Police returned it after evidence processing.
Sophie looked at it.
“Phone gone?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
“The police have it for the case.”
She put dolls inside instead.

Good.
Objects should be allowed to become ordinary again.
