Chapter 24 - Sophie asks about Amanda
Eight months after sentencing, Sophie asked:
“Is Amanda still in jail?”
“Yes.”
“Because she hit me?”
“Partly she had another case about taking things from the house. The hitting case had different consequences.”
“She wanted Daddy’s watches?”
“Some were on a list.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
“Did she have no money?”
“She had money problems.”
Sophie thought.
Then:
“Why not ask you?”
There was the question.
“I don’t know exactly. She was afraid I would learn things she had hidden.”
“Would you help?”
“Maybe with some things. Maybe not with all.”
“Would you still marry?”
I answered honestly.
“If she had told me the truth about her debt before the wedding, we would have had a hard conversation. I don’t know what decision I would have made.”
Sophie nodded.
Then:
“But after she hit me, no.”

“No.”
That answer was certain.
