Chapter 8 - Why Sophie mattered to the plan

Sophie was not part of Amanda’s financial plan.
Not deliberately.
That was important.
Amanda had not been building a custody case.
She had not planned to send Sophie away permanently.
But she saw Sophie as a risk.
The child noticed things.
Asked questions.
Entered rooms without warning.
Remembered where objects belonged.
Then honeymoon schedule.
Originally Sophie was supposed to spend four nights with my mother while Amanda and I flew to Rome.
The mansion would remain under house manager Evelyn Hart and security staff.
Amanda suggested:
“Maybe Evelyn should take a few days off too. She’s exhausted from wedding prep.”
I agreed.
Amanda arranged a paid spa stay for her.
Generous.
Now suspicious.
Then security.
Our overnight guard rotation was reduced because Amanda told the contractor:
“Family will be away and interior vendors scheduled.”
The contractor sent me an approval request.
I had forwarded it to Amanda with:
“Handle normal wedding-week details.”
She used my delegation.
Not hacking.
Not magical access.
I had given her enough operational authority to create a believable corridor for movers.
Then Sophie.
Three weeks before wedding she asked me:
“Why did Amanda put stickers on Grandma’s bowls?”
I thought:
Wedding inventory.
I said:
“Probably planning.”

They were removable auction lot stickers.
I did not know.
