Chapter 11 - Robert found the purse

After Mom collapsed, Robert went with her to the hospital.

So did her purse.

At some point during the second day, Melissa took me home.

Robert stayed.

Hospital records showed he signed for Mom’s personal belongings when staff moved her to intensive care.

Her purse was one of them.

Later, Robert said:

“I was looking for her insurance card.”

Inside the zipper pocket, he found:

His ring.

And a folded note.

Mom had written:

Found in utility room after Robert said he hadn’t gone inside. Photo saved. Ask Helen before signing anything.

Helen was the lawyer.

Robert panicked.

He took the ring.

He left the note.

Why?

He said later:

“I didn’t think clearly.”

Then why wear the ring at the funeral?

That question haunted everyone.

His answer was embarrassingly human.

He had worn that ring every day for fourteen years.

After retrieving it, he put it back on automatically.

At the funeral, grief and habit beat caution.

Then I saw it.
