Chapter 2 - Stop the funeral

I did not understand preservation of evidence.

Chain of custody.

Probable cause.

Negligence.

I understood one thing.

Mom had hidden that ring.

Robert had taken it.

So I screamed.

“Stop the funeral—he knows what happened to my mother!”

My aunt Melissa stood from the second pew.

Robert backed toward the chapel aisle.

“Katie is upset.”

I pointed at him.

“He took it!”

Melissa looked at Robert’s hand.

“What ring?”

Robert shoved it into his pocket.

That was a terrible decision.

My uncle stood near the exit.

Not threatening him.

Just not moving.

Robert said:

“This is insane.”

Melissa answered:

“Then show us the ring.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It’s mine.”

I cried:

“Mom hid it!”

Every whisper in the chapel stopped.

The funeral director approached carefully.

Nobody closed Mom’s coffin.

Nobody touched Robert.

Someone called police.

And my mother’s funeral stopped halfway through.
