Chapter 17 - The employee who tried to warn him

His name was Luis Carter.

Harbor Ridge’s senior renovation supervisor.

He had performed some mechanical work but told Robert:

“This needs Summit.”

Robert asked:

“Is it dangerous?”

Luis answered:

“I can’t certify it.”

Robert:

“That’s not what I asked.”

Luis:

“I’m not telling you it’s safe.”

Important distinction.

Robert later told Mom:

“Luis fixed it.”

Luis had never said that.

When investigators interviewed him, he produced texts.

He looked sick during testimony.

“I should’ve locked the system out myself.”

The prosecutor told him:

“You told your boss it needed a licensed contractor.”

“Yes.”

“Did you authorize occupancy?”

“No.”

Luis was not charged.

He eventually left Harbor Ridge.
