Chapter 8 - The detector started alarming

The carbon monoxide detector outside the laundry room began chirping intermittently.
Robert said it was defective.
He unplugged it.
Mom plugged it back in.
It chirped again.
Robert removed it.
They argued.
He bought another detector.
For several days:
No problem.
Then that detector showed an elevated reading.
Not immediately lethal.
Enough to matter.
Mom called Robert.
He was at work.
She said:
“The new detector is showing a number.”
Robert told her:
“Open the windows. I’ll handle it tonight.”
She took me to Aunt Melissa’s house.
That evening, Robert told Mom he had fixed the issue.
“What was wrong?”
“Vent connection.”
“Is it safe?”
“Yes.”
“Did the inspector clear it?”
Silence.
May you like
“No. But it’s safe.”
Mom did not accept that.
