Chapter 5 - Robert’s construction company

Robert owned a residential renovation company called:

Harbor Ridge Restoration.

Not huge.

Thirty-two employees.

Mostly upscale renovations around central Ohio.

Kitchens.

Additions.

Historic-home restoration.

HVAC subcontracting through outside vendors.

Business had been good.

Then Harbor Ridge won its largest project ever:

Renovation of a seventy-two-unit assisted-living complex.

Contract value:

About $18 million.

The contract contained strict safety-compliance requirements.

Any finding that Harbor Ridge knowingly used:

Unlicensed mechanical work.

Falsified permits.

Or concealed failed safety inspections

could trigger:

Termination.

Bond claims.

Loss of future public work.

Potential civil penalties.

Robert had personally guaranteed parts of the financing needed to staff the project.

If the contract collapsed, Harbor Ridge might not survive.

That became important later.

At nine, I knew none of this.

I knew only that Mom and Robert had been arguing about:

“the furnace people.”
