Chapter 26 - The ring came back to me

After the criminal case ended, the evidence ring was eventually released through the appropriate process.
Nobody wanted it.
Robert’s lawyer asked whether Robert wanted it returned.
He said no.
Mom’s estate asked me.
I was fifteen.
I said:
“Yes.”
Melissa looked surprised.
“What are you going to do with it?”
“I don’t know.”
For months it sat inside an evidence envelope.
Then I took it to a jeweler.
Not to wear.
I had the gold melted.
The jeweler created:
A tiny round pendant.
No black enamel.
No shape resembling the original ring.
On the back I engraved:
LISTEN THE FIRST TIME
Melissa cried when she saw it.
