Chapter 1 - The life vest on the sand

The first thing Cade asked me after I pulled him out of the surf was:

“Can I put my vest back on?”

Not:

Why did Grandma push me?

Not:

Why did Daddy tell her?

The vest.

Bright yellow.

Cheap compared with almost everything else at the private beach club.

To Cade, it was the difference between water being frightening and water being impossible.

I grabbed it from the sand.

Checked the buckles.

Put it back around him.

His hands were shaking.

Lenora stood ankle-deep in the water, soaked from the waist down after I kicked her away.

She looked more offended by her ruined beach clothes than by my son crying against me.

“He needs to stop depending on that thing.”

“He needs it because he is afraid.”

“That is exactly why he should stop wearing it.”

I stared at her.

“That sentence makes no sense.”

“It makes perfect sense if you want a capable child.”

Cade buried his face against me.

Then Pierce approached.

Dark swim shorts.

Open linen shirt.

Towels over one shoulder.

He took in:

Lenora soaked.

Me holding Cade.

Life vest back on.

Several beach-club guests staring.

Then Cade said:

“Daddy said Grandma shouldn’t bring me back until I stopped being scared.”

I looked at Pierce.

“You told her to do this?”

His silence lasted one second too long.

Lenora smiled.

“He was embarrassed that his clients saw his son crying yesterday.”

Pierce’s head snapped toward her.

“Mom, shut up!”

That was the moment I stopped wondering whether Cade had misunderstood.

My husband’s panic was not about what Lenora had done.

It was about what she had revealed.
