I called the resort aquatics director myself.
Her name was Morgan Hale.
I said:
“Cade will not participate tomorrow.”
She sounded relieved.
“Thank you.”
That surprised me.
“Why relieved?”

“Mr. Fenwick had told us Cade was comfortable in the water. One of my instructors saw him yesterday and questioned that.”
“Did anyone raise it?”
“Yes.”
“To Pierce?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
Morgan checked notes.
“He said Cade was tired and sometimes dramatized unfamiliar situations.”
My throat tightened.
Dramatized.
His fear became a presentation problem.
Morgan continued:
“We were planning to reassess him before allowing participation anyway.”
