Chapter 11 - Aaron Comes Home

My husband Aaron landed the next morning.
He had been in Germany.
When I called him, he listened.
Then asked:
“Are the kids safe?”
“Yes.”
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“I’m changing flights.”
No:
I’ll kill him.
No threats.
No promises to destroy anyone.
He came home.
At the airport, Tyler ran into him.
Aaron crouched.
Tyler whispered something.
Aaron’s face changed.
Later he told me.
Tyler said:
“I couldn’t stop Grandpa.”
Aaron answered:
“You were never supposed to.”
That became the first sentence our therapist built around.
Children are not backup adults.
They are not responsible for defending parents.
May you like
Tyler had done something brave.
We refused to turn it into an expectation.
