Chapter 7 - Who Knew My Balance?

The question I could not answer:

How did they know I had enough money?

The answer arrived from a place I did not expect.

Elaine.

My mother.

Two years earlier, I had been hospitalized briefly for appendicitis while Aaron was away.

Mom helped me manage bills.

I logged into my banking app on her tablet once.

I changed the password later.

That should have ended it.

But statements from one investment-linked savings account still went to my parents’ address.

Why?

I opened the account in college.

Never updated the mailing address because I used electronic statements.

Paper regulatory notices still occasionally arrived.

Mom had opened one.

Later she admitted it.

The notice showed the balance range.

Not an exact daily amount.

Enough.

Then she told Dad.

Dad told Natalie.
