Chapter 16 - Megan’s Boundary

Megan refused to speak to Elaine.
Not because I instructed her.
We asked.
The therapist asked.
She said no.
“Grandma hit me.”
“Yes.”
“She says sorry?”
“She has sent a letter through the lawyers.”
“Do I have to read it?”
“No.”
“Then no.”
Clear.
Adults complicate boundaries because we imagine history creates obligation.
Children sometimes understand immediately.
Someone hurt me.
I do not want contact.
That was enough for then.
Tyler asked about Grandpa more.
“Is he in jail?”
For a brief period.
Then released under conditions.
“Does he hate me?”
That question shattered me.
“No.”
“How know?”
I did not.
So I corrected.
“I don’t know exactly what Grandpa feels. I know what he did was wrong, and none of it happened because of you.”

Better.
