Chapter 9 - The Recording

Lucas’s video lasted seventeen minutes and forty-two seconds.
The most important section was less than three.
Dad:
Hand over all your savings. Your sister needs a house.
Then the assault.
Then Mom striking Megan.
Then Natalie:
All this because of your selfish refusal to help your sister.
My statement:
You touched my children. You are never seeing us again.
Then Lucas revealing the phone.
But the earlier part mattered too.
Dad said:
“The bank only needs to see the funds come from you.”
I answered:
“Because the gift letter says they’re mine.”
Mom:
“Exactly.”
Me:
“I didn’t sign it.”
Natalie:
“You were going to help eventually.”
I said:
“That isn’t a signature.”
Then Natalie said something investigators replayed repeatedly.
“It’s only fraud if you actually refuse to follow through.”
Legally inaccurate.
Emotionally revealing.
