Chapter 26 - The First Family Gathering Without Them

Three years later, we hosted Thanksgiving.
Aaron’s parents.
Lucas.
My cousin Jenna.
Friends.
No Richard.
No Elaine.
No Natalie.
That absence once felt like a crater.
By then it felt like seating.
People sat where there was room.
Nobody arranged bloodlines.
Tyler spilled cranberry sauce.
Megan accused Lucas of cheating at cards.
He denied it badly.
Aaron burned one tray of rolls.
I looked around.
Family had become less about obligation and more about behavior.
Who shows up?
Who respects no?
Who apologizes without demanding payment in forgiveness?
Who can hear:
That money is not yours
without treating the boundary as betrayal?
Blood mattered.
May you like
History mattered.
Neither overruled conduct.
