Chapter 8 - The Children

At the hospital, Tyler had bruising along his hip and side from the kick.

No fracture.

No internal injury.

Megan’s cheek was red and swollen.

No facial fracture.

No eye injury.

Both were physically okay.

That sentence brought relief.

It did not erase what happened.

A child specialist interviewed them separately.

Tyler said:

“Grandpa kicked me because I saved Mommy.”

I cried when I heard that.

Not because he was wrong.

Because a five-year-old should not have to narrate himself as a rescuer in an adult assault.

Megan was angrier.

“Grandma hit me because I was helping Tyler.”

Then:

“Aunt Natalie smiled.”

That detail stayed with her.

Not the money.

Not the mortgage.

May you like

The smile.

Children notice emotional betrayal with frightening precision.
