Chapter 13 - Oren’s first interview

A child specialist named Dr. Marissa Boyd interviewed Oren.

Not me.

I watched none of it live.

Good.

Afterward she gave the relevant summary.

Oren described the service room as:

“The waiter closet.”

He said Sabella began sending him there because:

“Adrian needs to learn family.”

Then:

“She says I make Dad look weak when I cry.”

That hurt.

He said sometimes food came.

Sometimes he did not want it.

Sometimes Sabella removed it because:

“You can eat after people leave.”

The longest period without dinner on an event night appeared to be roughly four hours beyond his normal meal time.

Wrong.

Not starvation.

He had breakfast and lunch.

Specificity matters.

Oren also said:

“She says Dad doesn’t know if I’m his.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s his wife.”

There.

Authority borrowed from marriage.

My wedding ring had given Sabella credibility in my son’s mind.

I had never considered that.
