Chapter 2 - What the room already knew

Nobody spoke.

Not even Adrian.

That mattered.

He was nine years old.

He sat three seats away from Sabella, wearing a black dinner jacket and looking at me as though someone had removed the floor beneath him.

I regretted the sentence almost as soon as I said it.

Not because it was false.

Because a child had heard it.

Your son isn’t.

Biology spoken like a weapon.

Arthur saw my face.

He moved immediately.

“Ladies and gentlemen, dinner is concluded.”

People did not move.

He repeated:

“Now.”

That tone worked.

My security director began clearing the hall without touching anyone.

Sabella stared at me.

“What did you do?”

I looked toward Adrian.

“Not here.”

“You tested him?”

“Not here.”

“You had no right.”

“Not here.”

Adrian whispered:

“Dad?”

That was the moment the entire spectacle stopped feeling powerful.

I walked to him.

He pulled back.

“You said I’m not yours.”

I crouched.

“You are not losing your home tonight.”

His eyes filled.

“That’s not what you said.”

No.

It was not.

I had used a biological fact to destroy Sabella’s threat and accidentally detonated it inside a child.

“I should not have said it like that.”

He stared at me.

“Are you my dad?”

Legal answer.

Emotional answer.

Biological answer.

Three different things.

I chose the only one appropriate for a nine-year-old standing in a ballroom.

“I’m the man who has raised you since you were little.”

“That means yes?”

“It means I am not abandoning you tonight.”

He started crying.

Sabella moved toward him.

Security stepped between us.

I raised one hand.

“Do not block her from her son unless there is a safety reason.”

Arthur looked at me.

Good correction.

Sabella went to Adrian.

Oren clung to my jacket.

Two children.

One had been locked away.

One had just learned the father he trusted might not be his biological father.

May you like

The adults had done enough.
