Chapter 24 - Oren chooses where he eats

For almost a year, Oren refused formal dinners.
I let him.
Then worried I was teaching him that Sabella had successfully made those rooms unsafe forever.
His therapist said:
“Invite. Don’t force.”
So I did.
At ten, there was a small foundation dinner.
“Want to come?”
“How long?”
“Ninety minutes.”
“Can I leave?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Anywhere safe in the house. Tell me first.”
“Food upstairs?”
“Yes.”
“All kids?”
“Yes.”
No heir table.
No descendant display.
Just families.
He came.
Forty-two minutes later:
“I’m done.”
I stood from a conversation with a bank chairman.
“Okay.”
The chairman looked surprised.
Good.
I walked Oren downstairs.
He changed clothes.
Played video games.
No locked door.
No symbolic bravery.
Choice.
May you like
That was enough.
