Chapter 14

The bell above the bakery door jingled cheerfully as Dante pushed it open, a sound that violently clashed with the tension radiating from him. The sweet, warm aroma of vanilla, cinnamon, and fresh bread washed over Maya, bringing a wave of painful nostalgia. She stepped inside, keeping Sophia tightly behind her legs, shielding the child from the inevitable confrontation.

The bakery was empty of customers. Behind the glass display case, arranging a tray of cannolis, was Mrs. Rossi. She was a frail woman in her late sixties, her silver hair pulled back into a neat bun. When she looked up and saw Maya, a genuine, warm smile spread across her wrinkled face.

"Maya, dear! What a surprise," Mrs. Rossi called out, wiping her hands on her apron. Then, her eyes shifted to the towering, imposing figure of Dante Russo standing beside her. The smile vanished instantly. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking suddenly very old and very terrified.

"Mrs. Rossi," Dante said, his voice low and dangerous, filling the small bakery. "We need to talk."

Mr. Rossi emerged from the kitchen at the back, holding a dusting wand of powdered sugar. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with fear as he recognized the infamous mafia boss standing in his shop.

"Mr. Russo," Mr. Rossi stammered, stepping protectively in front of his wife. "We paid our dues this month. We don't owe your family anything."

Dante ignored the plea. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the crumpled receipt, and slammed it onto the glass display case. The loud smack made Mrs. Rossi flinch.

"I don't care about your protection money," Dante growled, stepping closer to the counter. "I want to know why my daughter was holding a receipt from this bakery with a message written on the back."

Mr. Rossi stared at the paper, his hands shaking violently. He looked at the handwriting, and a look of profound horror washed over his face. He didn't speak. He just shook his head rapidly.

"Who gave this to her?" Dante demanded, his voice rising, his pale gray eyes burning with lethal intent. "Who is using your shop to communicate with my enemies?"

Maya watched in horror as Mr. Rossi collapsed against the counter, clutching his chest. Mrs. Rossi cried out, catching her husband before he hit the floor.

"Please!" Mrs. Rossi sobbed, looking up at Dante with terrified eyes. "We didn't know what it meant! She just asked us to slip the receipt into the pastry box when the nanny came to pick up Sophia's order!"

Dante froze. The absolute fury in his demeanor halted, replaced by a sudden, agonizing shock. "She?" Dante whispered, his voice cracking. "Who?"

"Your wife," Mrs. Rossi cried, holding her gasping husband. "Elena. She was here four days ago."
