Chapter 77

Schönbrunn Palace was an opulent sea of gold, crystal, and winter splendor. Towering arched windows reflected the glow of monumental chandeliers, while a grand chamber orchestra filled the gilded ballroom with sweeping Strauss waltzes. European aristocracy, corporate titans, and foreign dignitaries mingled in tailored tuxedos and glittering couture, drinking vintage champagne, completely oblivious to the shadow war reaching its crescendo beneath the classical music.

The grand double doors swung open, and an immediate, hushed whisper rippled across the ballroom.

Dante Russo stepped onto the marble floor. He was an imposing, magnificent vision in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding posture radiating the regal authority of an undisputed sovereign. On his arm walked Maya, breathtakingly beautiful in an emerald-green silk gown that cascaded to the floor, her brown hair styled in soft, elegant waves that framed her serene, radiant face. They did not look like hunted survivors; they entered the room like kings reclaiming stolen territory.

Across the ballroom, standing on a raised VIP mezzanine, Baron Heinrich von Steiner lowered his champagne glass. The seventy-year-old oligarch was gaunt, with predatory hawk-like eyes, impeccably groomed silver hair, and a bespoke tuxedo adorned with state honors. A cruel smirk touched his thin lips as he spotted Dante.

"The American peasant finally brought my property," Von Steiner whispered to his chief of security. "Is the private gallery cleared?"

"The gallery is sealed, Baron. Our tactical team is positioned behind the draperies," the enforcer murmured. "The moment he surrenders the ring, we eliminate him and the woman."

"Good," Von Steiner replied, adjusting his cufflinks. "Let us finish this charade."

Dante caught Maya’s gaze, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her temple. "Matteo’s team is in position. Stay within the sightline of the Austrian federal guards near the main entrance."

"Make him confess, Dante," Maya whispered back, her voice filled with absolute faith. "I will be waiting right here."

Dante released her hand and walked with slow, deliberate strides toward the east gallery, the heavy oak doors closing behind him as he crossed the threshold into the lion's den.
