Chapter 18

The industrial district of Queens was shrouded in darkness, the relentless rain turning the potholed streets into slick, black rivers. Hidden in the shadows of an abandoned warehouse, three heavily armored tactical vans idled silently. Dante Russo sat in the lead vehicle, checking the magazine of his heavy pistol with mechanical precision.
Maya sat in the back of the van, terrified and trembling, with Sophia securely strapped into a car seat beside her. Dante had refused to leave them at the estate. If the traitor is inside my house, you are safer with me, he had declared. Maya hated the logic, but she couldn't deny it.
"The garage is heavily fortified, boss," Luca reported over the radio, monitoring a drone feed. "Thermal shows at least fifteen armed guards inside. Apex isn't just a transport service; it’s a front for the Barone family."
Dante’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. The Barone family was his oldest rival, a syndicate he thought he had crushed years ago. If they were involved in Elena’s disappearance, this wasn't just a kidnapping; it was a coup.
"We don't breach the front doors," Dante commanded, his voice cold and steady. "We go through the roof. Cut the power grid. I want complete darkness."
A tense silence fell over the van as Dante’s men moved into position. Maya squeezed Sophia’s hand, praying that the violence would remain outside their armored cocoon.
Suddenly, the streetlights illuminating the massive Apex garage flickered and died. The building plunged into absolute darkness.
"Execute," Dante ordered.
The silence of the night was shattered by the deafening roar of explosive charges detonating on the roof of the garage. The tactical vans surged forward, crashing through the chain-link perimeter fence.
Dante threw open the door of the van and stepped out into the rain, his pistol raised. He moved with terrifying, lethal grace, flanked by his highly trained strike team. They breached the side doors of the garage, moving into the darkness with night-vision goggles.
Inside the van, Maya covered Sophia’s ears, trying to muffle the sounds of suppressed gunfire and shouting echoing from the building. The raid was fast, brutal, and overwhelmingly decisive. Dante Russo was not a man who fought fair; he annihilated his enemies.
Ten minutes later, the gunfire ceased. The heavy metal doors of the garage groaned open.
Dante walked out into the rain, his charcoal suit pristine, completely unfazed by the violence he had just orchestrated. He was holding a small, heavy steel lockbox.
He walked up to the side of the van and pulled the door open. He looked at Sophia, his pale gray eyes entirely devoid of anger, filled only with a desperate hope.

"Is this it, principessa?" Dante asked softly, holding up the box.
Sophia looked at the steel box, then reached into her pocket and pulled out the tiny silver key. She held it out to her father.
