Chapter 74

Winter in Vienna was an austere masterwork of snow-dusted imperial architecture, towering baroque cathedrals, and freezing alpine winds. Flurries of white swept across the grand boulevard of the Ringstrasse, dusting the roofs of black town cars idling outside the historic Palais Schwarzenberg.
A convoy of three armored sedans bearing the diplomatic markings of Russo Logistics pulled up before the marble façade of the Bankhaus von Meran—one of the oldest, most secretive private banking institutions in Central Europe.
Dante stepped out into the biting cold, dressed in a bespoke charcoal-gray wool coat over a dark three-piece suit. Beside him walked Maya, exuding an effortless, stately grace in an ivory cashmere coat. Behind them, Matteo and four plainclothes tactical operatives from the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate moved with fluid, vigilant precision. Sophia had been secured in a fortified safehouse outside the city under Austrian federal protection.
They were ushered through gilded archways into the subterranean private vaults beneath the bank. The air grew thick with the smell of polished brass, ancient parchment, and chilled hydraulic fluid. The chief archivist, an elderly Austrian nobleman with wire-rimmed glasses, led them to an isolated, reinforced chamber constructed of solid titanium alloy.
"Vault zero-seven," the archivist announced quietly, gesturing toward a pedestal containing an optical scanner and an oval recess.
Dante stepped forward, resting his thumb against the biometric pad while pressing the black sapphire ring into the recess. A sharp electronic chime resonated through the stone chamber. The heavy titanium door hissed open, revealing a velvet-lined safe.
Inside rested a ruggedized military-grade server drive and a thick folio bound in black leather. Maya carefully lifted the drive, connecting it to Matteo’s encrypted portable terminal. A cascade of green code illuminated the subterranean gloom as the files decrypted.
"My God..." Matteo whispered, his breath catching in his throat as he scrolled through the documents. "This isn't just financial records. It’s a comprehensive, un-redacted registry of the Golden Circle’s continental leadership. Names of sitting European ministers, defense contractors, and private military commanders who funded the global arms corridors. Elena spent ten years gathering every thread of their treason while she was trapped on that island."
"This is the kill switch," Dante said coldly. "This is why they were terrified."
Before Matteo could initiate the cloud upload to Interpol servers, the vault’s overhead halogen lights flickered and died. The heavy blast doors at the end of the main corridor slammed shut with a deafening, metallic crash.

"System breach!" the archivist shrieked in terror. "The external security grid has been severed!"
The piercing shriek of breaching charges echoed through the concrete walls. Dante drew his suppressed custom sidearm in a fraction of a second, shoving Maya behind a reinforced titanium pillar. "Matteo! Secure that drive! We’re flanked!"
