Chapter 17

The massive wrought-iron gates of the Russo estate swung open, welcoming the armored SUV back into the fortress. Dante didn't wait for the guards to open his door; he was out of the vehicle before it fully stopped, his mind racing with the implications of the silver key.
Maya unbuckled Sophia and carried the little girl into the grand foyer. The estate was buzzing with activity. Heavily armed men moved with lethal purpose, securing perimeters and monitoring camera feeds. Dante stood in the center of the chaos, issuing rapid-fire commands.
"I want every property Elena owned under her maiden name searched," Dante barked at his second-in-command, a scarred man named Luca. "Every safety deposit box, every gym locker, every storage unit. That key opens something small, and she hid it for a reason."
Maya stood off to the side, holding Sophia’s hand. The little girl clutched the silver key tightly, refusing to let it go.
"Mr. Russo," Maya said quietly, stepping forward.
Dante turned, his pale gray eyes locking onto her. The frantic energy in the room seemed to pause.
"She didn't hide it in a bank," Maya said, her voice steady despite the heavily armed men staring at her. "If she was terrified enough to use a bakery receipt to pass a message, she wouldn't trust a bank where your men could track her."
Dante frowned, considering her words. "Then where?"
Maya knelt down to Sophia’s eye level. "Sweetie, did mommy take you anywhere special? A place that was just for you and her? A place daddy didn't know about?"
Sophia looked at the silver key in her hand, then up at Maya. Slowly, she nodded.
"Can you tell me where it is?" Maya asked.
Sophia leaned forward and whispered softly into Maya’s ear. "The purple house."
Maya stood up, looking at Dante. "She says the purple house."
Dante’s expression went blank. "I don't own a purple house. Elena hated the color purple."
"The crayon," Maya remembered instantly, her eyes widening. "At the restaurant. She drew the bad car in purple crayon. And she said 'purple' when she spoke for the first time."
"The logo," Dante finished the thought, his jaw tightening. "Apex Executive. The transport service."
"It’s not a house," Maya realized, the pieces clicking together with horrifying clarity. "It’s a car. The purple house is the black SUV with the purple logo. That’s where Elena hid the lockbox."

Dante stared at Maya, a terrifying, predatory calmness settling over him. The frantic energy vanished, replaced by the cold, calculated focus of a mafia boss preparing for war.
"Luca," Dante ordered softly, his voice echoing in the silent foyer. "Gather the strike team. We are paying a visit to the Apex Executive garage."
