Chapter 45

The brutal firefight raged until the very first pale streaks of dawn. The initial Corsican assault force had been decisively repelled, leaving over a dozen bodies scattered among the crushed grapes in the vineyard, but Dante knew with absolute certainty that Antoine would call in heavy reinforcements. The beautiful villa in Tuscany was permanently compromised.

Utilizing the dense, rolling morning fog as cover, Dante, Maya, Sophia, and Matteo retreated through a hidden subterranean maintenance tunnel that emptied into the dense forest behind the hills. They boarded a rugged, matte-black off-road vehicle stashed in a camouflaged garage and tore south toward the sprawling metropolis of Rome.

"We have a deep-cover safehouse located in the ancient Catacombs beneath the city," Matteo grunted, pressing a fresh bandage against his bleeding shoulder. "It is entirely invisible to thermal satellite imaging and operates completely off the global digital grid."

Throughout the tense, agonizing drive, Maya remained completely silent, her hand gripping Dante’s tightly. She knew he was drowning in a suffocating ocean of self-loathing. He had promised to give her and Sophia a perfectly normal, peaceful life—a true 'Sweet Haven'—yet here they were, fleeing through the shadows like hunted animals once again.

"Do not blame yourself, Dante," Maya whispered softly as the vehicle merged into the bustling, historic streets of Rome. "As long as we are together, we can survive anything."

Dante looked at her, his pale gray eyes flashing with an excruciating mix of profound pain and a lethal, volcanic resolve. "I am going to end this, Maya. Once and for all."
