Chapter 30

Three months later, the sweet, intoxicating scents of toasted butter, rising sourdough, and Madagascar vanilla spilled out onto the bustling Brooklyn sidewalk. Sweet Haven had officially opened its doors, instantly becoming the beating heart of the neighborhood. A line of eager customers stretched down the block, admiring glass displays laden with flaky croissants, seasonal fruit tarts, and delicate cannolis.

Behind the counter, Maya moved with effortless grace, her white apron dusted with flour, a radiant, unyielding smile lighting up her face. The exhausting double shifts at Bellanote were a memory of the past; her lifelong dream was finally breathing in front of her.

The brass wind chimes above the door sang softly.

A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit walked in, holding the hand of a little girl in a beautiful lace dress. Dante’s presence still commanded the room, turning the heads of a few patrons, but Sophia immediately dismantled the tension with an excited cheer.

"Maya! Is my purple cupcake ready?"

"Right here for my favorite pastry chef!" Maya laughed, leaning over the marble counter as Sophia darted around the partition and wrapped her little arms tightly around Maya’s waist.

Dante stepped up to the register, placing a stunning bouquet of fresh purple hydrangeas on the counter. His pale gray eyes looked at Maya with an open, undisguised warmth that had completely replaced the cold mafia boss of the past.

"Business looks good today," Dante murmured, his gravelly voice smooth and gentle.

"It’s wonderful," Maya smiled, feeling a familiar, pleasant blush rise on her cheeks. "Thank you for the flowers, Dante."

Sophia climbed onto a high wooden stool, happily sinking her teeth into a blueberry cupcake, frosting dotting the tip of her nose. She looked at Maya, then at her father, and with the innocent clarity of a child, she grabbed Maya’s flour-dusted hand and placed it firmly inside Dante’s large, warm palm.

"Stay together," Sophia chirped happily. "Daddy, Maya, stay together."

Maya’s breath caught, her cheeks warming, but as she instinctively tried to pull back, Dante’s strong, calloused fingers closed gently around hers, refusing to let go. He held her gaze, his voice dropping to a low, heartfelt promise.

"Sophia has the right idea, Maya," Dante whispered, stepping closer. "The bakery is yours... but would you consider sharing the rest of your life with the two of us?"

The autumn breeze swept through the open doorway, carrying the warm aroma of the bakery and bathing their intertwined hands in golden afternoon light. Looking into the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire to protect those he loved, Maya smiled and squeezed his hand tightly. The storm had passed, leaving behind a dawn sweeter than anything she had ever dared to dream.
