Chapter 25

Dante’s tactical units responded with overwhelming lethality. A concussive roar shook the highway as an under-barrel grenade launched from Matteo’s vehicle detonated the fuel tank of the blocking flatbed. A wall of orange fire tore through the fog, incinerating the sniper perches. Seizing the chaos, Dante’s driver floored the accelerator, ramming the three-ton armored SUV through a pair of interceptor sedans and tearing down the muddy shoulder.

The gunfire dwindled into the distance as the convoy veered onto an unpaved coastal trail cutting through the dunes.

Inside the cabin, the deafening adrenaline slowly subsided into heavy, ragged breathing. Dante pushed himself up, his hands checking Sophia and Maya with frantic urgency. "Are either of you hit?"

"We're fine... we're okay," Maya breathed, her voice trembling. Then her eyes widened as she caught sight of his sleeve. "Dante, you're bleeding!"

A jagged shard of tempered glass had sliced through his forearm when the passenger window sustained heavy impacts, soaking his black cuff in dark crimson. He had taken the hit while bracing himself over Maya’s head.

"It’s a scratch," Dante dismissively grunted, reaching for a handkerchief, but Maya caught his wrist with surprising firmness.

"Sit still," she ordered, her gentle demeanor giving way to undeniable authority. She grabbed the medical trauma kit from beneath the seat, dousing the deep laceration in antiseptic before binding it with tight, sterile gauze. Her movements were swift, delicate, and remarkably steady.

Dante sat entirely motionless. His pale gray eyes remained fixed on her face under the amber interior light. It had been years since anyone had touched him without fear, calculation, or malice—only pure, selfless care.

Beside them, Sophia reached out and gently laid her small, soft palm over Dante’s bandaged forearm. "Daddy... no hurt."

Dante froze. He looked at his daughter, then up at Maya. A sudden warmth pierced his cold exterior, cracking the fortress around his heart.
